Head Light Mount
Description
I wanted a simple, non-obtrusive way to mount a head lamp. Something that would not interfere with shifting, lowering
the steering column, and in my case, would not obstruct or inhibit my fold up passenger foot basket.
After searching the G and internet, I decided to try a simple solution using a piece of flat stock steel that
bolts to the U-Bolt at the base of the Steering Column. After some experimenting with dimensions and lengths,
I found the dimensions I needed to clear the shifter and not inhibit the steering column movement.
As with all my projects, you may need to modify the design to fit any criteria you need to meet as well. Click on

Materials
- 4-3/8" x 1-1/4" x 1/8" flat stock steel.
- Head Light of your choosing.
Tools
- Drill or Drill Press
- Hacksaw or Bandsaw
- Brake or Vise and Hammer
- 5/16" Drill Bit ( change to fit Steering Column U-Bolt size if necessary )
- 1/4" Drill Bit ( change to fit Head Light Mounting bolt size if necessary )
Steps
Refer to Figure A below for steps 1 thru 4.
Refer to Figure B below for steps 5 and 6.
-
Cut the 1-1/4" x 1/8" flat stock to length.
-
Mark the drill center points and bend lines on the just cut piece.
-
Drill the 5/16" ( or adjusted size ) hole.
-
Drill the 1/4" ( or adjusted size ) hole.
-
Insert the short piece of the 90 degree end 3/4" into the vise or at the center point of the
brake so that 3-5/8" is sticking out and bend 90 degrees. This will leave a backside measurement of 7/8" length ( 3/4" + 1/8" ).
-
Insert the opposite end 1-1/4" into the vise or at the center point of the
brake and bend 30 degrees in the same direction as the previous bend.. You can measure the bend as you go using a protractor set to 150 degrees.
